Gabions Stone Fill

General

Which type of Gabion is suited for your project is depending of the type of application , the desired aesthetics and the local availability of the fill.

The Stone Fill

Gabion baskets are generally (but not exclusively) filled with graded stone. The density of Gabions is based on 60% of the specific weight of the rock fill.

Care must be taken to emphasise the contractor that all attempts must be made to minimise large voids during filling. If the correct size of stone is used then this problem is easiliy overcome. The responsable should check regularely that there are no voids bigger then the smallest stone size.

Specifications

Rough angular stonefill is favoured because of their friction and stability. Cobbles , pebbles and other rounded stone are disadvised but can be used for small walls <1.00m. For welded Gabions we use a mesh aperture of 76.2 x 76.2mm. Nominal dimensions is 75 x 75mm. The choses stonefill needs to be bigger then this size. If not stones can escape the Gabions resulting in deformation and stabilityproblems.

The most used gradation varies between 80/120 and 100/200mm. It is normally accepted to have 6% by weight less then 100mm. If it is possible to tighten the grading to 100/150mm this will improve Gabion filling.

Typical nominal rock densities for Gabions fill are listed below. To allow contractors to be able to estimate the needed weight of stone required , it is usual to quote 1 m³ with 1600kg or 1.6 ton.

Stonetype                                                Weigth in kN per m³

Granite                                                       17kN/m³
Limestone                                                   16kN/m³
Sandstone (only hard and durable)               16kN/m³
Recycled concrete                                       15-16kN/m³
Granular fill (Bastions only)                          14-20kN/m³
